ORGANIZATION
HISTORY
Advocacy for Incarcerated Families (AFIFA) was founded in response to the overlooked challenges faced by families of incarcerated men, identified through engagement with Korinda Correctional Facility in Busia County in 2018. The situation intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting the urgent need for targeted support.
In 2020, a five-member Board of Trustees was formed to guide the organization’s development, leading to official registration by the NGO Coordination Board on 8th July 2022. AFIFA received formal authorization from the Kenya Prison Service in October 2022 to collaborate with prison welfare services across the Western Region.
Despite limited resources, AFIFA established operations through volunteer support and partnerships, launching its secretariat in December 2022. In 2023, the organization initiated key programs including the Wives of Incarcerated Men Advocacy (WIMA) support group, awareness campaigns with government administrators, and strategic collaborations with like-minded organizations to advance its mission.
Our Mission
Palliating the backlash of incarceration on the family (women and children) through improvement of access to quality education, welfare, relief from poverty, promotion of human rights and good governance.
